I recently watched, for about the tenth time, the movie Replacements starring Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman. Hackman, the coach of this rag tag group of NFL replacements, was doing all that he could to motivate his team after suffering a heartbreaking loss the previous Sunday. They now were facing a game that would determine if they made the playoffs. The coach felt as though there was a lack of trust among the teammates. He realized that most teams had months to learn to trust each other, but he knew he had but one week to get the players to believe in one another. So, he started to force a dialogue. Here’s how it went:
The coach wrote the word FEAR on the board and asked the players to speak about their fears. After hearing about spiders and insects, Reeves’ character finally said that he feared quicksand. The players asked him to explain. He stated that the quicksand feeling came about when one thing went wrong, and then another, and then another. You try fighting, but the quicksand takes you under. Without something to grab hold of or someone to help, you slide under the sand to a certain death! It’s the same in financial and retirement planning. Make sure you have a team you trust to pull you out.
With a helping hand – someone to reach out and give you support – you can crawl out of the muck and get into solid ground. But, you have to TRUST that person to help you. We all have fears. We all dread the thought of stepping into the “quicksand” of financial failure. No matter how fortunate we may have been, we know that it could all come crashing down on top of us if we aren’t careful. TO be honest, a small amount of fear is probably a good thing – it keeps us working, moving forward. And…it keeps us safe.
But irrational fear is crippling and the solution, again, is trust. Trust in yourself, first. Know that you can and will develop or maintain a sound savings and retirement plan. Trust in the professionals with whom you work – attorneys, the accountants, and the advisors. And finally the members of the Safe Money Places® Agent Network that are ready to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to stay safe.
